Julia Weiner, Art Historian, on Female Baroque Artists

Julia Weiner on Judith Leysters & Artemisia Gentileschi

Julia Weiner on Judith Leysters & Artemisia Gentileschi

WE Barnet are delighted to invite you to join us for talk on baroque female artists by Julia Weiner which will focus on two renowned 17th century artists: Artemisia Gentisleschi and Judith Leyster.

Julia Weiner was educated at Oxford University and the Courtauld Institute of Art.  She is Director of Content for Liberal Studies at Regent's University London where she teaches a range of art history, history and world religion modules. She has worked in the education departments of the British Museum, the National Trust, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Courtauld Gallery.

Julia was art critic of the Jewish Chronicle for nearly 30 years and wrote regularly for the Jewish Quarterly and Jewish Renaissance.  She has curated exhibitions for the V&A, the Jewish Museum, the Ben Uri Gallery and the London Jewish Cultural Centre. Recent research projects were a biographical essay on the sculptor Nehemiah Azaz, available on the artist's website and editing the memoir of renowned printmaker Agathe Sorel.

Artimesia Gentileschi, the daughter of an artist, grew up in Rome where her father taught her to paint.  When aged 17, she was raped by painter Agostino Tassi.  This violent episode and the subsequent trial are generally regarded as having affected her subject matter.

Judith Leyster was a Dutch painter who became well-known for her genre paintings.

Julia will look at works by these two female artists and compare them to works on similar subjects by male artists and point out key differences.
