Petition to guarantee the supply of medicines after Brexit
We, the undersigned, call on HM government to guarantee the supply of common medicines beyond a six-week period.
Shortages of medicines such as contraceptive pills, anti-inflammatory drugs and painkillers for chronic pain conditions that predominantly affect the health and well-being of countless women up and down the country. The NHS is currently experiencing unprecedented drugs shortages and as the UK fast approaches the possibility of a no-deal Brexit, the question of future medicine supply is becoming increasingly urgent.
The government has encouraged suppliers to stockpile six-weeks worth of vital medicines where possible, in case of a no-deal Brexit. However, many common drugs are already in short supply and recent assessments suggest that, if the UK does exit the EU without a deal, disruptions may continue for up to six months. Stockpiling is not a long-term solution. The public requires greater clarity on which medicines will be affected in the event that the UK leaves the EU and what steps are being taken to ensure supply.
