"A profoundly insightful look into the hearts and minds of three unforgettable characters who are at once bound together and separated by forces beyond their control."
Leeds Branch of the Women's Equality Party will be holding the next in our series of 'Culture Club', our regular book and film discussion group, on Wednesday 21 October 2020 at 19:30 online via Zoom.
Our book for this evening is An American Marriage, by Tayari Jones. Newlyweds Celestial and Roy are the embodiment of the American Dream until one day they are ripped apart by circumstances neither could have imagined. Roy is arrested and sentenced to twelve years for a crime Celestial knows he didn't commit. Devastated, Celestial finds herself struggling to hold on to the love that has been her centre, taking comfort in their closest friend. When Roy's conviction is suddenly overturned, he returns home ready to resume their life together...
Continuing the American theme, we will also be discussing the Netflix documentary, Miss Americana! Miss Americana follows American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift and her life over the course of several years of her career. The film has been described as a "raw and emotionally revealing look "at Swift "during a transformational period in her life as she learns to embrace her role not only as a songwriter and performer, but as a woman harnessing the full power of her voice".
You are welcome to join us, whether or not you have read the book or watched the film.
