Philip Caldwell – equal parenting rights means ensuring both parents, regardless of gender, are offered the same amount of parental leave, and have equal access rights to their child/ren. The WEP seeks to put pressure on and work with other parties to ensure the elected government is equal, fair, and accountable, and it absolutely is a viable political party.

You can’t have a political party , as I understand the term, with only 6 objectives all focused on one area can you? What are you going to do if, theoretically, you were elected to government ( yes I know it will never happen). You can be and/or call yourself anything you like but you can’t be a viable political party. And “equal parenting rights” ??? I presume you mean equal with men? (what else). You must be joking!! really, is it a joke? If anyone needed equal rights in many family matters it is men, not women.

The renaissance was meant to make things equal for everyone. But it didn’t make indigenous people, working classes or women part of this agenda and this is deeply ingrained in culture. So if getting some special treatment is what is needed to create equality then that might be necessary. But I would hardly call striving to create a fair and balance of power between all people asking for special treatment. If all people can be represented fairly then no one should need special treatment.

It’s not about competing with men or being ‘given special treatment’ it’s about cooperation. with everyone working together for a fair and equal society. Who is doing the ‘giving’ anyway? We are all in this together.

I’ve read your policies and can’t find anything in there that actually strives for equality. Instead it seems to want to place women above men through quotas – this won’t work. We do not need to compete with men or look to be given special treatment because we’re women, which is what it seems your party is aiming for.

I am still on the sidelines with regards your party. I do think that certain so called feminists believe that women are totally incapable of using independent thought regarding what they wear and undertake. If it is cold and/or raining I wear sensible clothing for health reasons. This I have done since I able to dress myself.
I also believe that some feminists refuse to acknowledge the problems of sweatshop labour abroad, as well as refusing to acknowledge double barrel feminism. For example, refusing to acknowledge that women of different races, religions and sexual orientation can be discriminated against for these reasons as well as sexism.
Finally, it is not clear your views on trade unions. I am part of a group of workers who are taking action against their employer under the EVP (Equal Value Pay) Act. The only reason we were made aware of this possible breach of legislation was through our trade union.

Great work so far. I would like to see The WEP demanding access to legal abortions for women in Northern Ireland.

Really delighted with the policy document, thank you all for your hard work and considered, thoughtful and principled approach. Having signed up on general feminist grounds I was fully expecting to disagree with at least one or two policy points – didn’t happen!

I loved this! Thank you all for standing up and speaking out for me! Really feels like Sophie Walker can be a credible and audible voice for WE and achieving equality not just in our lifetime but now.

In response to Helen’s “too much of a good thing,” I wish to comment that my ultimate goal is to challenge the object of the CHASM between the rich and the poor. Seeing as half the population is under represented enduring various brands of ‘being kept down’, for want of a better expression, the focus on women and all things woman, I consider, is needed first, so as to deal with the unequal power balance that have left us with this heritage. Then the important issues can be handled fairly and policies made with everyone’s interests at heart.

All good BUT I am wondering what all the other policies are. There can be too much of a good thing talking about women ALL the time.

In response to the ’Magpie’ I would like to comment (living in Sweden) that in Småland’s Post this morning I have just read that yesterday 300 children went to the theatre in Växjö to watch a film about bullying, which accompanied a lovely picture of a young girl about four year’s old who told “att hon lärt sig att ingen ska känna sig utanför” (no one should feel on the outside). Here in Sweden, the model is very positive and I do sense a difference with the way things are in the UK where I feel change is needed.

On a second point, having studied archaeology here in Sweden, and working with what is known in Sweden as ‘genus arkeologi’ (feminist and gender archaeologies under the same umbrella) the stigma which had attached itself to the word ‘feminism’, is counterbalanced in Sweden into a more accommodating and less alienating word, ‘genus’. i I have personally experienced negative reactions to the word feminism when I have expressed my beliefs and feelings, and some of these have been from women. A feminist ideology is one thing but in order to form one coherent voice, there is something wise about getting my old uncle to eat ‘bean stew’ having previously turned his nose up at the same dish described as being vegetarian! Food for thought…
