Climate Change and the Women’s Equality Party

We are in the midst of a Climate Emergency which means that interference in our planetary climate system will result in widespread disruptions to society for centuries to come. The impacts are already being felt and will get more acute. They affect the poorest and most marginalised most severely, endangering lives and livelihoods.

The Women’s Equality Party recognises that the Climate Emergency is a critical gender and social justice issue and recently passed a motion by an overwhelming majority, to integrate Climate Justice across all its policy objectives.

The first step is to understand how WEP policies relate to Climate Justice and we have undertaken a ‘climate audit’ of our current objectives. Next, WE must develop policy in this area urgently to inform up-coming elections, to position the Party for the UN Climate Summit, and to inform ‘Build back Equal’ and ‘Reimagining society and economy’ in the coming year.

This session will explain the steps already taken on Climate and provide an opportunity to discuss what WE should do next.

The discussion will be led by:

• Dr Katrina Brown, chair of the WEP Climate Change Steering Group (CCSG), and

• Suz Martin, Movement Builder for Equality in Scotland and member of the Policy Committee
