No woman should ever be turned away from a refuge.
Refuge services are facing a funding crisis - last year refuges were forced to turn away 90 women a day who needed their support. Domestic abuse offences in London have risen by 63% since 2010. Domestic homicides in London trebled between 2017 and 2018. Meanwhile, funding for refuges has been cut by as much as 75% in some London boroughs. Refuge services are needed now more than ever.
Refuges are a lifeline. They provide safe accommodation for women and children fleeing domestic abuse, supporting them to make decisions about their futures. Ten years of austerity have left these services critically under-resourced and unable to meet the needs of domestic abuse survivors. Refuges are life-saving and life-changing services that must be prioritised. 1.3 million women experienced domestic abuse last year in England and Wales. We demand ring-fenced sustainable funding on a grant basis, to ensure the provision of vital specialist services for women.
