Get Involved - Conference 2020
Want to Get Involved with Conference?
Whether you are a member attending conference to enjoy the talks, debate motions and check out the virtual bars OR an organisation looking to join the marketplace, look no further! The Women's Equality Party Conference 2020 has an abundance of new and exciting ways that you can Get Involved.
Take a look below to find out how...
Our conference marketplace has always been a hub for collaboration between conference goers and exhibitors from across the country. We didn’t want to miss this out of the 2020 event so our marketplace is going online too. You’ll be able to access information about our exciting retailers and exhibitors involved, get to know the stall holders on our community page, and even treat yourself to some feminist merchandise! If you are part of an organisation and interested in applying for a marketplace spot, please email [email protected] with 'MARKETPLACE APPLICATION' as the subject line.
Do you have a campaign idea that could change the world?
This is your chance to win support and funding to make your campaign a reality.
At this year’s Party Conference we are holding our very first Campaigns Coven! In a Dragons' Den style event, activists like you will pitch their change making ideas to a panel of expert judges for a chance to win £5000 of funding and party support to make their idea a reality.
Did you attend the 2016 or 2018 Women's Equality Party Conference?
WE want you!
In the weeks leading up to Conference, WE would love to involve you in our blog series, Pass the Mic, exploring your experience of Conference.
If you want to get involved, please email [email protected] with 'PASS THE MIC BLOG' as the subject-line. Please detail your relationship to the party (member, branch officer, supporter, etc.), so that we can send you more information about how to get involved.
Open Mic:
This is open mic like you've never seen it before: a "couch to 5k for confidence". Members are given three minute slots to find their voice and tell you about an issue that all feminists should care about. Be prepared to laugh, cry and rage with fellow members. Open Mic will take place between 20:00 and 21:00 on the 15th of October.
You’ll get the chance to submit a request to speak on the day, and you’ll get three minutes to talk about a topic of your choice.

Motions that are adopted (voted for by party members at Conference) become party resolutions and official party policy, or change the way we run our Party. The deadlines for motion proposals, amendments and emergency motions have now passed. Members will debate the motions in three sessions at Party Conference.

Committee Elections
Women’s Equality Party Elections 2020
The Women’s Equality Party hereby notifies members of elections to its Steering Committee and its Policy Committee.
Nominations will open at 9am on 1 September, (please do not apply before that date). All applications will need to be submitted by 24 September, and voting will take place online between 18 October and 16 November 2020.
There will be a hustings session at Party Conference for candidates for the respective roles and committees to engage with members and debate each other.
The Steering Committee has five vacant positions and Movement Builder for Equal Parenting and Caregiving is also vacant, they will be elected by simple majority.
Who can vote?
Party members can vote. Now that the ballot is open supporters can join as a member and vote. To do so they must take out an annual membership, paying by card, in order to be eligible to take part in the election, as the bank cannot process any other form of membership before the ballot closes.
What does the Steering Committee do?
The Steering Committee is the Party’s central decision-making body outside of Party Conferences. It steers the direction of the Party by agreeing strategy, planning ahead and reacting to internal and external factors. It monitors the Party’s activities and outcomes against its mission, aims and objectives, and makes sure the Party’s activities are within the budget it sets and approves each year. It is also the body with the sole discretion to decide when and where WE stand candidates in elections.
Who should put themselves forward?
The Party needs a breadth of experience, skills and expertise in these important strategic roles. Committee members need to be able to debate, listen, analyse and work together to reach consensus about Party direction. If you are committed to steering and growing our movement of political activists, to making it diverse and representative of all women, if you have the time and energy WE need, please put yourself forward.
WE encourage members from underrepresented groups to put themselves forward. If someone you know would be a great addition to the Steering Committee, please encourage them to apply!
Full guidance is available here. Please make sure you submit this Equalities Monitoring Form when you submit your application
The Policy Committee has three vacant positions, including two representatives for Wales for the first time! Each role will be elected by a simple majority.
Spokesperson for Equality in Wales
Movement Builder for Equality in Wales
Movement Builder for Equal Parenting and Caregiving
What is the Policy Committee?
The Policy Committee is made of the spokesperson and movement builder for each of our seven policy goals and the party in Scotland and now Wales. It is chaired by the leader of the party, Mandu Reid.
The Committee helps us communicate our fantastic policies far and wide, growing our movement and representing us as spokespeople at events and in the media.
What does a policy spokesperson do?
Working with the Party Leader and central staff, as well the movement builder in their area, spokespeople spread our Party’s policies and aims as far and wide as possible through media engagement, events, branches and networks. They take a lead on the policy area they represent, always looking for opportunities for engagement and keeping abreast of political and sector developments in their area.
What does a policy movement builder do?
Working with the Party Leader and central staff, as well the spokesperson in their policy area, movement builders focus on developing the relationships and networks with individuals and organisations working in their policy area, to build support and momentum for our work. From small grass roots organisations to national bodies, and including our branches and members with an interest in the policy area, this role is to connect and inspire people with our policies and related campaigns.
Here’s what one of our current committee members had to say about being on the Policy Committee:
Feel free to get in touch with any of them to find out more about their experiences of being on the Policy Committee.
WE encourage members from underrepresented groups to apply, particularly Disabled women.
Full guidance is available here.
Please make sure you submit this Equalities Monitoring Form when you submit your application.

If you’d like to apply for a refund for your ticket, please email [email protected] or request your refund through Eventbrite.
Unfortunately, Eventbrite’s fees are non-refundable.
What if the event is cancelled?
You will receive a full refund if the event is cancelled.
Why are you moving the conference online?
We made the decision to move the conference online for several reasons. Firstly, we assessed the risk that venues will not be open in October and large crowds will not be permitted to gather. Secondly, we are able to make the conference accessible for a larger group than previously. We are able to make the tickets cheaper, and online events don’t require attendees to travel a long way to a venue. The party has recognised bringing the conference online is an opportunity to create an innovative new way to bring members and supporters from across the country together.
How do I access the conference?
The conference will be accessed via an online platform. The platform will have an interactive schedule and links for attendees to access individual talks, panels and workshops. Shortly before the Conference you will be sent a link to access the platform. We will publish guidance about how to use the platform in the coming months.
Please email [email protected] if you have any accessibility requirements.
What technology will I have to use?
The event video conferencing will be using Zoom. In the run up to conference, we’ll be publishing guidance for using the technology required. We want the event to be as accessible and easy to use as possible. Please email [email protected] if you have any accessibility requirements.
Do I have to watch or listen to all of the conference?
Not at all. You’re able to dip in and out of the conference at your convenience.
Can we still debate and change Party policy?
Yes - we'll be holding sessions for debate and votes on Party policy. This is a crucial part of our work as a political party. Find out more or submit a motion.
