I’m a British-Somali feminist, an FGM campaigner and an activist for equality. I’m standing for Hornsey and Wood Green because I believe in a more equal future for Haringey.
I moved to Britain at four years old as a child refugee, and I know first hand the impact of rising intolerance and division across the UK. I believe it’s time to reimagine our immigration system – valuing the contributions migrants make to our communities, and bringing down the barriers that prevent migrant women from fulfilling their potential.
Today, with Brexit looming and Trump in office, the world is a colder and darker place for people like me. I am a young, black Muslim woman from a family of refugees. I am a statistic often quoted but too rarely seen. I’m standing because too many girls and women like me are still invisible – and I believe it’s time to change that.
