Hospital campaign + local updates! 26th January 2024

Dear HWB residents,

Happy new year! I hope January 2024 has treated you and your families well.

Our big news is that we have launched a campaign + petition calling on Maria Miller MP to use her influence to secure the funding for the new Basingstoke hospital in writing in the Spring Budget!

We've worked hard on this for the last few months as our concerns about the funding grew. You'll know that over the last year there has been much press from Dame Maria Miller and the local Conservative group celebrating the £900 million that they have secured from the Government for the new Basingstoke hospital project. Following reports from the National Audit Office and Public Accounts Committee I believe these claims are overstating the case, and are misleading the public on the surety of the money.
I have therefore started a petition asking that Maria Miller MP use her influence to ensure the funding is put in writing in the Spring Budget. We want Maria Miller to show us the money. The Basingstoke Gazette wrote about the petition at the start of this week when we launched and again yesterday; we have had cross-party support from the local Liberal Democrats and the Greens as well as the Basingstoke and Deane Independents via Council Leader Paul Harvey. Since going live our petition has garnered nearly 350 signatures in just four days.

This is a vital issue for everyone in Basingstoke and the surrounding area. If you haven't already, please sign and share the petition with your friends, families and networks. The more of us that speak out, the better we can hold our leaders to account for their promises.

Other news:
  • My next Ask me Anything session will be on Monday 26th February from 7-9pm at the Holly Blue pub. Drop in if you have questions or issues to discuss!
  • Our canvassing schedule is really stepping up so many of you will see us on the doors this weekend and in the coming weeks. If you miss us, do reply here and let me know a better time to come round for a chat.
  • I have been looking into the schools crossing patrol issue that some of you have contacted me about and I have been assured that the coming review of the Hatch Warren patrol will have a public contribution element, so I will keep an eye on this and contact people as soon as we know the details. In the meantime, the HCC Future Services Consultation is currently open which also concerns the school crossing proposals and can be responded to here; the deadline is 31st March. If you need assistance with this, please let me know.

As ever, please do let me know if there are questions or issues I can assist with. If you've missed any, you can read all previous editions of 'WE For HWBhere.

Best wishes to you!
