Statement on Belfast High Court's decision on abortion

The Women's Equality Party welcomes by Belfast High Court’s ruling that Northern Ireland’s abortion law breaches human rights.

This is a victory for women in Northern Ireland, thanks to the courageous stand taken by Sarah Ewart. All women should have the right to access this basic form of reproductive health care. The fact that women in Northern Ireland have been denied their rights for so long is a travesty.

The Women’s Equality Party campaigns to make abortions free, safe and legal in every part of the UK. WE will keep campaigning until abortion is moved out of criminal law and regulated in the same way as any other medical procedure. Today’s decision by Belfast’s High Court is an important landmark on the way towards full decriminalisation of abortion across the country. As someone who has had an abortion myself, I would like to express my personal solidarity with the incredible women in Northern Ireland who have campaigned tirelessly to make this verdict happen.
