WEP Richmond Campaigns

WEP Richmond is current running the following campaigns:

Ending Violence Against Women and Girls

  • Monthly VAWG Vigils: Our campaign to end violence against women and girls (VAWG) has been running since we held our first vigil on Twickenham Green on Monday 3rd October 2022 and we have been holding them each month since then. On the first Monday of each month, we meet by Amélie Delagrange's bench on Twickenham Green to remember all of the women and girls who have been murdered or hurt by men. For more information about our Vigils, please see our Event page.

  • Light The Path: Working with local councillors for the South Twickenham ward, WEP Richmond has a campaign underway to compel Richmond Local Authority to install lighting for the path that runs across Twickenham Green. You can read more about this campaign on Twickenham Nub News.

  • Ask ANI: Ask for ANI (Action Needed Immediately) is a codeword scheme that enables victims of domestic abuse to discreetly ask for immediate help in participating pharmacies and Jobcentres. The scheme was developed by the Home Office and was launched across the UK on 14 January 2021. WEP Richmond has been engaging with pharmacies across the borough to encourage sign up to the scheme, ensure staff understand how to respond to anyone Asking for ANI and to display subtle information about the scheme. More information can be found about the scheme on the UK Says No More website.

Ending Sexism In Schools

WEP Richmond is working with secondary schools across the borough to encourage them to review the list of set texts covered in English lessons.

Buffer Zones for Abortion Clinics

In April 2019, Twickenham became only the second place in the country to implement a Buffer Zone around an abortion clinic to prevent religious protestors harassing clients of the clinic. At the time, the only legislation available to us was the use of a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) and WEP Richmond worked with the clinic, BPAS and a group of dedicated local residents to run a campaign over several years to convince Richmond Local Authority to implement a PSPO protecting clients of the BPAS clinic in East Twickenham. The PSPO is only valid for three years, requiring an additional consultation each time it needs to be renewed. We were successful in achieving a renewal in 2022 and we are hopeful that by the time another renewal is necessary, the Home Office will finally have responded to pressure to implement legislation protecting all clinics nationally. For the latest information and history of this campaign, please see Reclaim Rossyln Road.

Childcare

WEP Richmond is running a campaign working with local childcare provisions across Richmond to understand how childcare needs are being met to ensure working parents have access to affordable childcare.
